What to Wear Rowing: Training & Regatta Clothing

The right rowing outfit depends on the session, the weather and your club’s requirements. Begin with clothing that allows you to reach, bend and move comfortably. Your coach or club can advise on local conditions, required visibility and safety equipment.

Explore rowing gear and apparel

For erg training

Choose a top and bottoms that remain comfortable through repeated strokes. A rowing unisuit is one option; rowing trou paired with a tank or training shirt is another. Check for loose fabric that could interfere with the seat or handle. Keep a dry change of clothes available for after the session.

Compare rowing unisuits and performance tops and bottoms to build an outfit around the way you train.

For on-water practice

Consider the forecast, wind and how long you will be outside. A close-fitting base layer can be worn with other layers as conditions require. Check that sleeves, hems and pockets do not interfere with your stroke or equipment.

Products in our range have different fabrics and features. If you want a particular feature, such as a stated UPF rating, check the individual product listing rather than assuming it applies to every garment.

For cooler conditions

Plan layers for the session and for the time before and after it. Try your planned outfit in a seated reaching position to check comfort and movement. A warm hoodie may be useful at the boathouse or between races, while your on-water layers should suit the conditions and your coach’s instructions.

For regatta days

Confirm which uniform your club requires before packing. Bring your racing kit, suitable warm-up layers and dry clothes for the journey home. Check your unisuit’s size and condition ahead of the event so there is time to resolve questions.

If you are ordering new kit, review product availability, preorder notices and delivery information before buying. A team-store closing date and a retail shipping estimate refer to different ordering processes.

For coaches and supporters

Tees, sweatshirts and outerwear can help you represent the club while watching from the shore. Browse USRowing gear or discuss a custom rowing teamwear collection that includes athletes, coaches and supporters.
